I do have a few spots I really like there for wedding photography, I am going to share a few to give you an idea of the possibilities there.

If tide and weather permits, wedding ceremony can be held right on the beach. During this wedding we were going hide out from a light drizzle in a boat house, but our brave bride, Tanya, decided to go for the beach option what ever the weather.
There is a boat house, which is great for a rainy day or for some shots featuring some of the maritime accessories.

I like using it for group shots and some textures.

Following ceremony and some group shots by the boat house I like to wonder off into the woods and get some nice photographs of the couple in the magical forest on the way to actual Point.

Next, of course we make our way to the famous Red Bridge. Great job on the part of the caretakers to create such a great photo opportunity.

There are lots more shots, of course on the beach, rocks, driftwood, possibilities are endless. I will keep a few secrets and surprises for next time.

On the garden path, beautiful, lush greens, what a place...!

Ziplining is a new and fun thing to do and here on Vancouver Island we have Adrenaline Zipline. Acres of beautiful coastal forest and in close proximity to Victoria (only 30 minutes ) and Sooke Harbour House (15 min). I actually happen to live just outside of Adrenaline’s property, a couple of street addresses away.
As soon as I heard about this idea I thought that, even though it sounds like a ton of fun, it poses some serious challenges for the wedding photographer. Shooting in the woods can be challenging by itself, let alone  flying through the air between the trees.
For the bride there is a different challenge, you have to be able to fit into a harness, which is fine but, the dress….umm, does not work.

Well, we got together a small expedition to try and experience it first hand before we start inviting brides and grooms to take this on.

After a brief consultation, we figured out that the bride needs pants. But we wanted to simulate the actual experience, as close as possible, so our test bride Amanda Wiley, event coordinator for the Sooke Harbour House, kept dress shoes on along with a veil and flowers.

After a short ride in an ATV, we were up at the beginning of the course which consists of several lengths of ziplines ranging from 200ft to 1000ft.

We did a few first shots and right away I realized the challenges with light, speed and lens limitations. I would hate to find myself unprepared for this, so I was very grateful that this was a trial run. It was revealing to me many of the things that will be required for the truly fun and stunning images possible in a location like this.
You only really have a few seconds to focus and shoot a fast sequence. Not only the light changes every few feet of flight but the subject is rotating around as well as moving towards or away from me.

For a wedding photographer this season is a real bonus. After summers’ hot days, blazing sun, harsh shadows and stark contrast of midday, this is a real treat. I like the feeling and the airy feel to the portraits in the fall.

Plus it is not hot or cold and the bride, groom and photographer feel quite comfortable outside.

This wedding I photographed at Sooke Harbour House , it (the Sooke Harbour House) was just as charming as it is in the summer, I think even more so as the winter settles in, it feels more cozy and warm.

Eloping is popular these days and I enjoy photographing couples alone without crowds of guests and onlookers, it seems somehow even more fitting this time of year.

Here is a wedding that did not lack colour in any way.

The location was just outside of Langley, BC. Yes, not Victoria, I do get out of the Island now and then. It is a fun change of scenery and you do tend to be more alert since you have to come up with something on the spot in an unfamiliar location, it is like playing music, like improvising in a sense.  I find the results always surprise me with a fresh angle.

If you are looking for ideas for your wedding locations, you don’t have to pick exactly the ones everybody goes to, make it personal, reflecting your interests, your personalities. It is more fun for both of us that way.

Spring can be sketchy, weather changing every hour here on Vancouver Island. Although that is a fact, I am yet to be rained on. In all my years of doing wedding photography I was never rained out of a photoshoot.
Anyway, this is Brentwood Bay Lodge. I am not featuring much of the lodge itself just a bit of the sunny, spring atmosphere.

I love the soft sunlight and fresh greenery. Brentwood Bay is a nice location for eloping, I would feel a little restricted if I had a large group, but with just the wedding couple or a few guests it is a very nice spot. Plus it is only minutes away from all the farm roads and fields in Saanich if you like the counrty look.

I had a chance to be a wedding photographer at a wedding in Tofino, BC, Vancouver Island.

This wedding took place at TinWis Resort and on the famous Long Beach.

Although the resort is very nice, I did not focus too much attention on capturing the building but the beach, yes…

Lovely setting just outside the hotel. The path leads right down to the beach. It was fun to see how they set up the chairs and everything, it almost looks like a theater and the stage is the ocean itself, very cool.
